Community Groups Discuss Health Care Crisis

February 16, 2008

KGMB9 News

The alliance of community groups known as “FACE” came together at the capitol Saturday to talk about the current health care crisis.  This is the same alliance that kept the affordable housing at Kukui Gardens from being sold to developers.  Now they are taking on the breakdown of health care system.  Right now, for example, two hospitals on Oahu are on the verge of bankruptcy Hawaii Medical Centers West and East.

“If those two community hospitals go down there is no service out in the Leeward coast except for the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. Think about it. What can we do to support our doctors who are committed?” asked House Speaker Rep. Calvin Say.

“We would like to address the reimbursements for Medicare and Medicaid.  We would like to address tax credits for those who care for people in homes,” said Sister Brenda Lau of St. Philomena Church.

Another major problem the group discussed is the shortage of doctors and medical services on the neighbor islands.
