Hawaii’s governor defends Kukui tenants

Gov. Linda Lingle of Hawaii has stepped into the Kukui Gardens drama, saying it’s illegal for HUD to accept the owners’ prepayment on a subsidized mortgage that would keep 875 households paying affordable rents in Honolulu until 2011.
