Prayer Vigil to focus on building community, not violence

Honolulu, HI, January 31, 2012—FACE clergy and Mayor Wright Housing residents will hold a prayer vigil in front of the Mayor Wright Housing office.

The Mayor Wright Housing community has recently been struck with tragedy and violence. FACE clergy have joined with Mayor Wright residents to speak of hope during this time of loss and fighting. “We are a strong and proud community, but we have been portrayed as violent people. We are gathering with the faith community to pray for change”, says Gloria Castro, who serves on the tenant association board.

FACE clergy, representing churches and temples from all across the island, stand together with the Mayor Wright residents to make a stronger and safer place for its people. “We have a deep belief in community, and know that most people in Mayor Wright hold to this belief. We cannot let a couple bad actors represent the whole”, Reverend Alan Mark, statewide president of FACE.

WHO: Faith Action for Community Equity and Mayor Wright Tenants
WHAT: Prayer Vigil for community and peace
WHEN: Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 10:30 a.m.

FACE will be holding a powerful meeting to bring our community stakeholders and decision makers together with the community. The title of the meeting is symbolic for our community. Everyone needs to be in the canoe, facing the same direction, and paddling, to make significant headway in any direction.

In this year’s public meeting we will be raising up issues of affordable housing, including public housing, immigration, education, and healthcare. We are also celebrating some significant victories we have won this year so far:
1. The repair and replacement of the water heating systems in Mayor Wright Housing Development, and
2. The passing of the mortgage foreclosure mediation law (Act 48, also known as SB 651) that we helped to shape and create
We will have some very key decision makers with us. Senator Roz Baker, Managing Director of the City and County of Honolulu, Doug Chin, and Director of Community Services, Sam Moku. We have a few more decision makers that are tentatively attending our meeting.

The meeting will be an exciting event.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Please click on this link to see the map of the location.
1020 S. Beretania Street, Honolulu, 96814

Parking is located on the Victoria Street side. It is underground and is very limited. If you are a member of FACE congregations, please contact your representative or organizer (Pat Zukemura or Jun Yang) to see if a bus transportation has been arranged.
