2007 Legislative Session Adjourns

May 3, 2007

Kahuku hospital got a lifeline Thursday from lawmakers.  It was one of several items tackled Thursday before they adjourned the 2007 legislative session.  Democrats outnumber Republicans 63 to 13 in the legislature, so they were able to determine most of what passed into law.

More than $50 million of tax relief will go to middle and low income residents.  Millions more will go into a rental housing trust fund.  Lawmakers will spend $25 million to keep the low income Kukui Gardens apartment complex affordable.

They saved Kahuku hospital from bankruptcy, and they instituted a program that will provide health care for uninsured children.

“We’ll be the first state in the nation that will have health insurance for every single child. No other state gets to that point, and I think we can feel very proud of that,” said Rep. Kirk Caldwell, House Majority leader.

Lawmakers also passed a dam safety bill, created two new laws to protect pedestrians, and made Hawaii a leader in the fight against global warming.
