Kukui Gardens Residents Meet Board

April 4, 2006

KGMB9

Twenty-five hundred Oahu families fear they may lose the only home they can afford. Tonight residents packed in for their first chance to demand answers from Kukui Gardens’ board of directors.

Hundreds turned out to hear what the Kukui Gardens board had to say about the building’s imminent sale and its new owners.

While members can’t reveal the name of the buyer, they assure residents the company will keep the complex affordable for now.

“Are there plans for the buyer to keep housing affordable?” KGMB9 asked board member Eugene Tiwanak.

“Absolutely,” he replied. “Not only short-term, short-term in the sense to 2011, but we’ve asked they consider different options and I’m sure they will.”

But some residents say that’s not enough and they need a guarantee.

“We don’t know if it’s going to remain affordable after 2011,” said Kukui Gardens Association president Carol Anzai. “We wanted to get it resolved because we don’t want to go through this again five years from now. We don’t.”

The board says the buyer is a private, for-profit company. They’ll release the name of the company next month once the sale becomes final.
