Kukui Gardens Residents Protest Pending Sale

April 3, 2006

Some angry and frustrated families that are about to have their affordable apartments sold, tried to force their way into a meeting today.

Dozens of residents of Kukui Gardens marched downtown to demand a meeting with the building’s board of directors.

Board members were there to finalize a deal with a developer.

The demonstrators wanted to ask about that developer’s plans, but were turned away at the door.

They say it’s another example of how they’re being ignored.

“We’ve been asking to be a part of the meeting for a couple of months now and have been refused we can’t even get meetings with the individual directors,” said Rev. Bob Nakata of F.A.C.E.

“As you can see they’re trying to hide from us and we can only assume they’re trying to hide from us, but we will keep up the fight at this time,” said City Councilman Rod Tam.

Many residents fear whoever buys Kukui Gardens will eventually kick them out or raise their rents.

In a statement, the Kukui Gardens board says it is doing it’s best to ensure the new owner will keep Kukui Gardens affordable.

The board has agreed to meet with tenants tomorrow at the Kauluwela Elementary School cafeteria at 6:30 p-m.
